Reginald David Bailey was born in 1892 in Ashley (Newmarket Q4-1892 3B:483), baptised 1892 in Ashley, son of James and Amy BAILEY (née ANDREWS).

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Church Lane Ashley with his father James BAILEY [54] college gardener, born Ashley; his mother Amy [53] born Shudy Camps and sister Alice I. [25] born Ashley.

1911 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was still at Church Lane, Ashley with his parents (father now a farm labourer). His mother had borne 9 children but 4 had died. She died in 1913.

The pension card has the family still at that address.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
The war diary has:-
"Riez Bailleul - 27/7/16 -At 7 am Bn Inspection by C.O. 6:45 pm relieved 2.4th Oxford and Bucks on left sub section of MOATED GRANGE sector (M.30.c.2.6 to M.24.d.2.6) "A" Coy on right, "B" Coy right centre, "D" Coy (less 50 men employed on R.E.fatigues) left centre and "C" Coy on left.
Battn HQ in dugouts (M.23.c.2.3.). Two Coys of 2/1 Bucks attached in WINCHESTER POST (M.23.c.4.1.)..........Casualties O.R.'s 1 killed, 3 wounded.
